Grammy Awards: Inspiration or Validation

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

I will be the first to admit that winning a Grammy Award is definitely on my list of goals to attain as an artist. The Grammy Awards represent the highest amount of recognition of achievement for one's artistry in as a member of the recording industry. I have had the privilege of performing on a good number of Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated recordings over the course of my career, but that was always as a sideman member of a backing ensemble. You do get a pretty cool lapel pin made by Tiffany as a contributor to a nominated recording, but the hardware goes to the winner. This year, I am proud to have recorded on another Grammy-nominated album: Monk'estra Plays John Beasley. This is the third studio album I have played lead trumpet on as a founding member of John Beasley's Monk'estra. The previous two albums by the Monk'estra received nominations as well...we didn't come away with a win on either occasion, but perhaps the third time's a charm. In the meantime, check out this pretty cool EPK video where John gives a behind the scenes look at the process of making the album...be well...peace...
